Live roulette uses a real wheel streamed to your screen, with bets placed on a digital layout. UK casino lobbies include single-zero tables, American double-zero games and multiplier versions such as Lightning Roulette. Their layouts can look almost identical, but the odds and payouts differ.
A standard single-zero table pays 35:1 on a winning number. American roulette adds another zero; Lightning reduces the ordinary number payout to 29:1 alongside its multiplier feature. For casino options and other live games, see our UK live casino guide.

Live roulette tables compared
These live roulette games are listed in the UK roulette lobby at LeoVegas. Start with the wheel and payout rules, then check the table’s limits and betting time.
| Table | Format | Main distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Live Roulette | Standard live roulette | 37 pockets and a 35:1 payout on a winning straight-up bet. |
| Auto Live Roulette | Automated physical wheel | A live wheel without a dealer running each spin. |
| American Live Roulette | Double-zero wheel | 38 pockets; the extra 00 raises the house edge on standard bets. |
| Live Lightning Roulette | Single-zero wheel with multipliers | Selected straight-up bets can receive enhanced payouts; an ordinary winning straight-up bet pays 29:1. |
Some live roulette tables are streamed from a land-based casino. Grosvenor describes Live Victoria Roulette as a stream from its Victoria Casino in London. The casino setting does not determine the payout rules or betting limits.
What happens during a live roulette round?
You place chips on a digital betting layout during an open betting window. The result comes from a physical wheel shown on video. Once betting closes, you cannot change your accepted bets. The pocket where the ball stops decides which bets win.
On live dealer tables, a croupier runs the game. Auto roulette uses an automated physical wheel instead. It can appear in the same live casino lobby, but there is no dealer to chat with. In RNG roulette, a random number generator determines the result instead of a physical wheel. Both are forms of online roulette, but only the live-wheel version shows a real spin.
Watch the betting indicator rather than relying on the video alone. The interface shows when bets are open and when no more bets can be accepted.
Live roulette variants: European, French and American

Single zero: the standard European wheel
European roulette uses a wheel with 37 pockets: numbers 1–36 and zero. Eighteen numbers are red and eighteen are black. Zero belongs to neither colour, so a red or black bet is not a 50/50 chance: it covers 18 of the 37 possible results.
With standard payouts, the house edge is about 2.70%. This is a long-term mathematical average, not a prediction of what you will lose in one session.
French roulette and La Partage
Some French roulette tables offer La Partage. On a single-zero table offering it, half your even-money bet is returned when the ball lands on zero. A £2 bet on red would therefore return £1 if zero landed. A winning red bet still pays normally.
La Partage reduces the house edge on those qualifying bets to about 1.35%. It does not improve a straight-up bet, a dozen or a column. Evolution’s French Roulette description confirms the even-money rule; check that the specific table you open includes it.
American roulette and double zero
American roulette adds 00, taking the wheel to 38 pockets. On standard bets, the familiar payout ratios do not compensate for that extra losing result. PokerStars publishes a 94.74% theoretical RTP for its live American game, corresponding to a house edge of about 5.26%.
Special bets can have different returns. A table’s headline RTP should not be treated as a promise that every available wager has identical odds.
Standard roulette bets and payouts
These are the conventional payouts shown in the standard live roulette rules. Multiplier games may replace individual entries.
Inside bets sit on the numbered grid: a chip on 17 backs that number alone, while a chip on the line between 17 and 18 backs both. Outside bets use the labelled boxes around the grid, including red/black, dozens and columns.

| Bet | Numbers covered | Profit on a winning bet |
|---|---|---|
| Straight up | 1 | 35:1 |
| Split | 2 | 17:1 |
| Street | 3 | 11:1 |
| Corner | 4 | 8:1 |
| Six line | 6 | 5:1 |
| Dozen or column | 12 | 2:1 |
| Red/black, odd/even or high/low | 18 | 1:1 |
The ratio describes profit, with the winning stake also returned. A £1 straight-up winner at 35:1 returns £36 in total. Any losing bets placed elsewhere on the layout still need to be deducted when working out the result of the whole round.
Some tables also offer a racetrack panel, where numbers follow their order on the wheel. Our roulette racetrack guide explains neighbours bets and groups such as Voisins du Zéro, with examples showing how many chips each selection uses.
What changes in Lightning Roulette?
Lightning Roulette combines a single-zero physical wheel with randomly selected enhanced payouts. Each round has one to five Lucky Numbers, with values from 50x to 500x. You need a straight-up bet on the winning Lucky Number to receive its enhanced payout.
The trade-off is the ordinary straight-up return: 29:1 instead of 35:1. A £1 winning number without a multiplier therefore returns £30, including the stake. Splits, corners and outside bets retain their standard payouts. A red bet does not receive a multiplier just because the winning red number was selected.
The Lightning Roulette rules distinguish those bets. Read them separately from the rules for XXXtreme Lightning or another multiplier title; a shared name does not make the paytables interchangeable. Our Lightning Roulette guide explains the multipliers, payouts and RTP in more detail.
Minimum bets and the cost of a whole round
The minimum chip value is only part of your total stake. Five separate 20p number bets cost £1 for the round. Adding £1 on red brings that total to £2. Check the total-bet display before the betting window closes.
Limits can also differ by bet type. A table’s advertised maximum may not apply to every wager. Check the limits panel for the minimum and maximum allowed on the bet you want to place.
Playing live roulette on mobile
Before you play live roulette on a phone, check how easily you can distinguish a number from the line beside it. A misplaced chip can turn a straight-up selection into a split. The total-bet display, undo control and rules menu deserve as much attention as the video quality.
The video shows the wheel; the betting interface confirms your wagers. If the stream freezes, the picture alone cannot tell you whether a bet was accepted. The pace also affects your total stake: at £1 a round, 20 rounds means £20 wagered; 40 rounds means £40.
Results, fairness and sensible limits
Recent numbers describe previous spins. They do not make a number due or establish that a colour will continue. Changing stakes after a loss does not remove the house edge.
The Gambling Commission explains that live dealer integrity checks include the physical equipment and its continuing operation. A video stream alone is not proof of fairness. Check the operator’s current licence and the rules for the game you are opening.
Set an amount and a time limit you can afford before playing. If you want to compare the rules of other live table games, our live blackjack and live baccarat guides explain their different decisions and bets. For practical help with limits or taking a break, see responsible gambling support.
Live roulette questions
Is auto roulette the same as live dealer roulette?
Both can use a real wheel streamed to your screen. Auto roulette operates the wheel automatically, while a live dealer table has a croupier running the game.
Is red or black a 50/50 bet?
No. On a single-zero wheel each colour covers 18 of 37 pockets. Zero is neither red nor black, and an American wheel adds another zero pocket.
Do Lightning multipliers apply to red or black bets?
No. In standard Lightning Roulette, the enhanced payout requires a straight-up bet on the winning Lucky Number.
Does the minimum bet cover the whole layout?
Check the table’s limits. A minimum chip is not a fixed price for covering several numbers: the separate bets add together.
Can recent roulette results predict the next spin?
No. The results history shows what has already happened; it is not a forecast of the next winning number.
