How Live Dealer Blackjack Works

The dealer you see on screen is handling real cards. Your part happens through the controls: Hit asks for another card, while Stand leaves your hand as it is. Each decision has a time limit, so the dealer cannot wait indefinitely for your answer.

In a standard blackjack game, the aim is to beat the dealer without going over 21. Number cards count at face value; picture cards count as ten; an ace counts as either 1 or 11. You can win with 18 against the dealer’s 17. You do not need to reach 21.

Once your total passes 21, the hand is lost. A later dealer bust will not rescue it. A tie usually returns your stake; this is called a push. There is also an important distinction between blackjack and an ordinary 21: an ace with a ten-value card in your opening hand is a natural blackjack. Reaching 21 with a third card does not qualify.

These formats illustrate the differences between live blackjack games. They are not interchangeable versions of a single ruleset.

Bet Behind is another distinction worth understanding. You back a seated player’s hand rather than making all the playing decisions yourself. That is not the same experience as taking a seat. A player’s recent winning streak is not a reason to expect their next hand to win.

Table Limits and the Cost of a Hand

The minimum deposit is not the minimum stake at a blackjack table. Nor does the displayed starting stake necessarily cover a split, double or additional fee. For example, splitting a £5 hand requires another £5 in ordinary play; doubling both resulting hands, where allowed, brings the total committed to £20.

Blackjack Payouts and Table Rules

Blackjack Payouts: 3:2 and 6:5

The payout printed on the table normally refers to a natural blackjack, not every winning hand. On a £10 bet, a winning blackjack paid at 3:2 produces £15 profit plus the returned £10 stake. At 6:5, the profit would be £12. An ordinary win paid at 1:1 produces £10 profit.

These are payout examples, not advertised stakes at a particular casino. Special variants can change the settlement rules, including what happens when both you and the dealer have blackjack.

What Soft 17 Means

“Soft” means the hand contains an ace counted as eleven. With an ace and a six, the total is soft 17; a ten and a seven leave no such flexibility. Look for the table’s soft-17 rule: it tells you whether the dealer must take another card or stand. This is fixed by the rules, not a decision the dealer makes after seeing your hand.

Hit, Stand, Double and Split

Hit asks for another card. Stand means taking no more cards. In standard play, doubling adds an equal stake in exchange for one final card. Splitting an eligible pair creates two separate hands and requires another stake.

Splitting aces is a good example of why the small print matters. A ten dealt to a split ace may count as 21 without earning the blackjack payout. Tables also restrict when you can double, including whether you can double a hand after splitting it. Surrender is only available where the rules allow it.

RTP and Blackjack Strategy

The RTP shown for one blackjack game cannot be carried over to the next table. It is calculated using that game’s rules and assumptions about how the hands are played. Even when you follow those assumptions, a short session can finish far from the published figure: RTP describes a theoretical return over a very large number of hands.

Basic strategy is a set of mathematically informed playing decisions. The correct chart depends on the rules; a generic chart is not a reliable fit for every variant. It cannot guarantee a winning session. Doubling your next stake after a loss is a betting system, not a change to the probabilities of the cards.

Side bets have their own payouts and probabilities. Perfect Pairs concerns the player’s opening pair; 21+3 combines the opening cards with the dealer’s upcard. Do not use the main game’s RTP to describe these bets. Insurance is also a separate wager, not protection against every losing hand. A welcome offer advertised alongside live blackjack may be a slots offer. The relevant terms are whether blackjack qualifies, how much of a wager counts and any maximum-bet restriction.
